Order of Operations
VocabularyParentheses or "round brackets" are the familiar ( ) symbols used in pairs to group things together.
NotesWhen following the order of operations, you solve any part of the equation in parentheses or brackets first (if they contain more than one operation, use all these order of operation rules), next the exponents (you'll learn about exponents in another grade), then solve any multiplication and division working from left to right and finally, solve any addition and subtraction working from left to right.
Example: 28 ÷ 7 x (6 + 7) - (19 + 25) Step 1 28 ÷ 7 x (13) - (44) We solved the parentheses. Step 2 4 x 13 - 44 We solved the division. Step 3 52 - 44 We solved the multiplication. Step 4 (answer) 8 We solved the subtraction. |
