Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
VocabularyA mixed number is a number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.
A proper fraction has a numerator that is smaller than its denominator. 2/3 is a proper fraction because 2 is smaller than 3. An improper fraction has a numerator that is larger than its denominator. 12/5 is an improper fraction because 12 is larger than 5. NotesYou can change a mixed number into an improper fraction to make it easier to add or subtract with other fractions. See "Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers" page for more help on how to do that.
