Add/Subtract Whole Numbers and Decimals
VocabularyA decimal point is a point or dot used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number. Example: in the number 36.9 the point separates the 36 (the whole number part) from the 9 (the fractional part, which really means 9 tenths).
NotesTo add or subtract whole numbers and decimals you ALWAYS line up the numbers in their correct place value locations before you begin any addition or subtraction. If the number contains a decimal, make sure to LINE UP the decimal points. Drawing a "decimal hallway" helps to keep the decimals lined up! Then you can add any zero place holders you may need and add or subtract as usual.
